An Overview of the Washington Wine Industry

A resident of Washington State, David (Dave) Leonti draws upon a background in construction, project management, and real estate to serve as a broker with Keller Williams Realty in Kirkland and Casa Dolce Homes in Sammamish. In his free time, Dave Leonti pursues a diverse range of hobbies, including wine tasting with family and friends.

For much of the 20th century, American wine-making was centered in California, but its neighbor to the north, Washington, boasts a wine-producing tradition that dates back to the 1800s. Wine-making took off in the state in the 1960s, and Washington currently ranks second in the nation in wine production.

Washington’s reputation as a premier wine-making region has much to do with the unique topography and climate of the part of the state that lies east of the Cascades. Much less cool and rainy than the coastal part of the state, Eastern Washington is marked by a dry, warm climate and ample sunshine. These characteristics make the area ideal for growing robust, dark grapes such as cabernet sauvignon, Syrah, and the state’s famous merlot. Today, more than 350 winegrowers make over 70 varieties of wine in Washington State annually.
